Coto de Caza News reporters dropped in on Anne Figueroa last week to inquire how she is able to run a busy interior design business and still handle her job as a Rancho Santa Margarita City council member. We asked:
What is the name of your design business and how long you have been doing it?
ANNE FIGUEROA DESIGNS- FINE INTERIORS. I have been designing homes for my clients since 1992. Over 27 years now.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT LOCATION?
I have been in my current location since 1994.
What is YOUR SPECIALTY?
I specialize in all aspects of residential design. I manage the project from the beginning of the design/construction stage to the final implementation of furniture and accessories.
Our staff includes myself and from 1 to 3 part time design assistants as needed.
My family has belonged to San Francisco Solano Church in Rancho Santa Margarita for over 24 years. I am a current member of the Rancho Santa Margarita Chamber of Commerce and served as an interim Board Director in 2017. I was appointed by Councilman Vaughn to serve as his Planning Commissioner in January, 2015 and served until December, 2018. I was elected to the Rancho Santa Margarita City Council in November, 2018. I am also a member of the American Society of Interior Designers which is a professional organization for designers to collaborate and grow their business.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS FOR YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSION?
The continual goal for my business is to make my clients 100% happy creating their dream home. I take great care getting to know my clients and learn about their design aesthetic while making their home function well for them.
I have been fortunate to work with many of my clients over a span of many years…designing multiple homes for them. I have also recently been working on downsizing a few clients to new homes they can more easily manage.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS BUSINESS OR PROFESSION?
I didn’t choose this profession…it chose me! I had an interest in design in high school but went to the University of Southern California to study business administration instead. I worked in the banking industry for over 10 years until I started my own design business.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST REWARD IN YOUR BUSINESS AND/OR MOST INTERESTING PART OF YOUR DAILY WORK?
The most interesting part of my daily work is to be surrounded by such incredibly talented individuals. I am fortunate to be around many different types of trades that all have incredible personal talents. It is also amazing when you can collaborate with other designers and product experts to create a dream space!
SPECIAL TRAINING AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE?
I am an Allied Member American Society of Interior Designers This is the designer’s professional organization whose members have the combination of education and experience to become a recognized member of the interior design profession.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION OF YOUR BUSINESS?
I have been fortunate to win various design awards over the years. Including:
OC Home Magazine Design Platinum Award 2002,- OC Home Magazine Design Platinum Award 2004 , – OC Home Design Awards Finalist 2006 .I have also been honored to participate in six different OC Philharmonic House of Design projects over the years. This month-long public event allows local designers to showcase their design talents while raising funds for music programs for elementary and middle aged school children in the Orange County area. More specifically;- 2003 Chelsea Manor, Orange , 2004 Nellie Gail, Laguna Hills,- 2005 Orange Park Acres, Orange,- 2006 Ladera Ranch – 2008 Newport Coastland- 2015 Shady Canyon.
WHAT IS THE BEST KNOWN QUALITY OF YOUR BUSINESS?
I take great pride in moving my projects along as quickly as possible with enough time added in for the design process to evolve. I get back to my clients and subs as soon as possible throughout the day and enjoy the process with each and every client.
WHAT ARE TOP THREE THINGS PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR YOUR BUSINESS?
I feel grateful every day to work at a job that I love. I have met so many wonderful people throughout my career and feel honored to be around such incredibly talented people. Creating beautiful interiors for my clients is the most amazing reward ever!
WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU MOST IN YOUR BUSINESS, TRADE, OR PROFESSION?
The designer who I found the most inspirational was Steve Stein who worked in the OC area for many years. He was such a design talent and I was always amazed by his design spaces. I feel so fortunate that I was able to accompany him to New York for a design trip. Unfortunately, Steve passed away a few years ago and is sorely missed in the OC design community.
It has been an absolute honor to have been elected to the Rancho Santa Margarita City Council. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful city and belong to such a wonderful community. I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing group of city council colleagues and to work with such an extremely talented city staff.
